After last week's best-of-baseball-answers extravaganza — which some of you loved, some of you didn't — we're back to all new questions this week with a little something for everyone: hard science, linguistics, television, gambling and... well, of course, baseball. But just a little!

Why does Russell Martin's jersey say "J. Martin" on the back?

- Joe

If you watched the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs (or any other time this season), you probably noticed that their catcher had the name "J. Martin" on the back of his jersey. This was strange for two reasons: (1) the Dodgers had no other Martins on their roster, so the first initial was not necessary for differentiation; (2) the Martin in question has the first name "Russell" — and it isn't spelled with a silent J.

Apparently the East York, Ont., native added the "J." to his jersey this year as a tribute to his mother, whose maiden name is the third of Russell Nathan Jeanson Coltrane Martin's five names.

Maybe next year Russell will pay tribute to jazz with a "C. Martin" jersey.
